AI-powered coaching is a feature that uses generative AI to help learners navigate LinkedIn Learning's content library and get personalized and actionable advice and examples to help them develop critical skills.

The full-screen AI-powered coaching experience is accessible at linkedin.com/learning/chatbot or from the left-hand navigation bar of LinkedIn Learning, titled “AI Coaching”.

Please review the following frequently asked questions about AI-powered coaching for Learning.

How do I use the AI-powered coaching feature?

The AI-powered coaching feature helps learners find LinkedIn Learning content across all professional skills. Learners can write prompts like the following examples:

  • “Teach me about pivot tables”.

  • “Help me find a video about JavaScript for experienced programmers”.

  • “How can I make meetings more engaging”?

The feature uses generative AI tools to convert the learner’s prompt into a search query. It responds with course, video, or learning path recommendations and may include a brief description of the content, explain topics, or offer actionable advice and examples.

If learners write prompts related to  Leadership and Management, Professional Development, and Career Development, the feature may summarize LinkedIn Learning video transcripts to explain topics or offer actionable advice and examples.

Here's a tip

Review Prompt Basics to learn more about how to write effective prompts and see examples of them.

If you are using the full-screen experience embedded in the Search bar, you can see content recommendations informed by your interactions with AI-powered coaching at the top of the search results page, with standard, filterable search results beneath it.

What kinds of questions can learners ask the feature, and how does it use generative AI to respond?

AI-powered coaching can help learners navigate LinkedIn Learning’s content library. Learners can ask questions or start conversations related to the skills they want to learn. In the backend, the feature leverages generative AI tools to convert the learner’s prompt into a search query, and may ask clarifying questions to better understand what the learner needs. It responds by recommending courses or videos in the LinkedIn Learning library.

Learners can also develop critical skills directly in the feature by asking questions related to Leadership or Management. The feature uses generative AI tools to summarize LinkedIn Learning video transcripts and explain certain topics, offer examples and advice, and provide instant feedback.

Here are some questions you can ask:

  • What techniques can I use to motivate and inspire my team members?

  • How can I lead more productive meetings?

  • How do I build rapport and trust with colleagues, especially when conflicts arise?

  • How can I approach a difficult conversation?

  • What strategies can I use to manage upward and ensure my concerns are heard by leadership?

What content does the feature reference as sources?

When a learner asks questions about Leadership and Management, Professional Development, and Career Development, AI-powered coaching’s advice, examples, and explanations often reference courses and videos published by LinkedIn Learning. Currently, it does not support custom content uploaded by an organization‘s admins or third-party content providers.

When learners ask questions about other skills or topics, the feature may pull general insights from OpenAI to respond to the learner before recommending content published by LinkedIn Learning.

What learner data does the feature reference to personalize conversations?

The feature personalizes the conversation based on a learner’s company and title from their LinkedIn profile as well as their career goal, followed skills, and learning history in LinkedIn Learning. This information can be edited at any time.

How many messages can learners exchange with the feature?

The full-screen experience may ask clarifying questions to better understand learner needs and often responds with several content recommendations throughout the conversation. However, capacity is limited, so learners may receive an error message when demand is high. If this happens, please return later and try again.

How do I start a new conversation with AI-powered coaching?

If you are using the full-screen experience, reload or refresh the page to start a new conversation.

If you are using the experience embedded in the search bar, write a new prompt in the search bar at the top of the page to start a new conversation.

How is conversation data stored and secured? Who has access to this data?

LinkedIn stores conversation data for one year and applies the same security controls as it does with other learner data (e.g., course viewing history). A learner’s conversations with the feature are not shared with other members or their employer. Learners can export their conversation data or delete it by closing their LinkedIn account

Here's a tip

LinkedIn does not store conversation data for learners who…

a) have not connected their LinkedIn Learning account with their LinkedIn account,

OR

b) have conversations with the feature in the EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway).

Your questions, responses, and personal information are translated into prompts for a generative AI model. At this time, LinkedIn uses Microsoft's Azure OpenAI API service to power the feature. Learner inputs are processed by LinkedIn using the Microsoft service but are not accessed by Microsoft or OpenAI except by Microsoft in the circumstances described here

Some members of the LinkedIn Learning team have access to learners’ conversations with the feature, but they use this information only to assess and improve the quality of the feature. Direct access to this data is restricted to the LinkedIn Learning team working on this feature.

How can learners provide feedback if they are not satisfied with how the feature responds to their prompts?

Learners can click the Like or Dislike icons next to the response and provide feedback through surveys on the product.

How can organization admins prevent their learners from using this feature?

Admins can turn off access for their organization in admin settings. Click on Customize, Learner Features, and turn off AI-powered coaching.
