How to Change Your Account Password

How to Change Your Account Password

How do I change my password?

I’ve just gotten my Geneseo account

Whether you are brand new to Geneseo or returning after a time away, you will set your account’s password the first time during the account claim process. See Claiming your Geneseo Account and Troubleshooting for more information.

I only have my personal computer

This is the recommended method for students to change their password.

These instructions assume you know your current Geneseo password. If you do not know your password, use the Reset / Recover a Forgotten Password Self Help guide instead to reset your password.

  1. Login to My Sign-Ins

  2. Enter the new password you want in the New password field of the box that appears

  3. Re-enter the password in the Confirm new password field

  4. Click the Submit button to complete the password change process

I have a computer given to me by the college

This section primarily applies to employees of the college.

See the Self Help guide Password Changing from a College-Provided Computer for instructions on changing your password on the computer provided to you by the college.

If the above options won't work because you forgot your password

  • Your new password must not match any weak or compromised passwords identified by Microsoft

Accounts not enrolled in MFA have similar requirements as above, but also:

  • Your new password must contain at least 10 characters

  • Your password must be complex, which means 3 of the following:

    • At least one uppercase character

    • At least one lowercase character

    • At least one number

    • At least one punctuation character, like ! @ # $ % ^

Updating Saved Passwords

When you change or reset your Geneseo password, you may need to update your devices and software with that new password.

Some devices and software will automatically prompt you to update your new password, others may require you to manually update the password or setup the account again.

  • Brightspace Pulse App

  • Geneseo Mobile App

  • Email client (Mail, Gmail, Thunderbird, Outlook)

  • macOS Keychain (See below)

  • Smart Phone (Apple, Android, etc.)

  • Tablets (iPad, etc.)

  • Web browsers (Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari)

  • Wireless network connection

  • VPN connection

Special Instructions for Updating your macOS Keychain

These instructions apply only to apply to macOS devices that are not provided by the College for use as your primary work computer

Follow these instructions to ensure that your Mac will continue to access Geneseo's wireless network (eduroam).

  1. Navigate to the Applications → Utilities folder and open "Keychain Access"

  2. In the left-hand navigation pane, select 'All Items' under 'Category'.

  3. Find the entry for "eduroam" (it's the wireless network you should be connecting to) and delete the entry.

  4. Now turn your wireless connection off and on again. It should now ask for an updated password.

  5. Enter your new Geneseo password and you should now have access to the wireless network again.
