Creating Accessible Math Equations
Follow one of the steps below to make your math equations accessible to students with visual impairments.
Avoid sharing PDFs containing math equations as they are typically not accessible to screen readers. To ensure accessibility, share Word documents with equations instead.
MathPix
STEM faculty have licenses to MathPix, a document conversion app specialized in converting PDF documents, LaTeX, and handwritten equations to accessible Word formats.
Use Word’s Equation Editor or MathType
Use Word’s built-in Equation Editor to create equations. This is fully compatible with the JAWS screen reader.
Use MathType to create equations.
If a student has MathType installed in Word, a screen reader is able to read the equation aloud for them. This is fully compatible with the NVDA screen reader.
If you have a student who uses a screen reader, be aware of what screen reader they use to ensure equations are readable by their software.
