How to Make Accessible Social Media
Please use the following steps to ensure that all of your social media content is accessible and inclusive to all viewers, including viewers with disabilities.
Steps
Add alt text to all posts containing an image.
Alt text is a short written description of an image that makes it accessible to people using screen readers. Add alt text to all images you post on Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, and Threads.
Avoid using images of a lot of text.
The most accessible approach is to include the full text within the social media post itself.
Include captions on all video content.
On most platforms, auto-captions are available and easy to add, but make sure to edit them for correctness, spelling, and punctuation.
Avoid using strobing, flashing transitions in videos.
Add content warnings for videos that include flashing lights, loud noises, etc.
Use camel case hashtags.
Capitalize the first letter of each word in hashtags to make them screen reader friendly. (Example: #DisabilityInclusion vs. #disabilityinclusion)
Limit the use of emojis.
Although screen readers can read the names of emojis, posts with too many can obscure meaning and information for those using screen readers.
Ensure images have strong color contrast.
Use a contrast checker to make sure you have enough contrast between your text and background.
Use plain language and default fonts for posts.
