MFA for International Travel

Audience

This self-help document is intended for:

  • students studying abroad

  • international students returning to their home country

  • any employee or student traveling internationally who needs to log into Geneseo resources (e.g. gmail, my.geneseso, etc.) while abroad

Before you travel

  1. Review your Microsoft Security Info and ensure that you have multiple options registered.

  2. If you only have cellular network-based options registered (call and/or text), ensure that at least one other option, such as an authenticator app or browser extension, is added.

  3. Consider changing your default MFA option to one of your non-cellular network-based options.

  4. Be sure to bring the associated device (smartphone for app, laptop for browser extension) with you on your travels.

Logging in while abroad

  1. After entering your username and password at the login screen, you will be prompted with your default MFA option, for example a Microsoft Authenticator push notification.

  2. Click I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now or sign in another way to use one of your other registered options.

  3. Select the option you wish to try and follow the prompts.

  4. NOTE: If you have registered for push notifications, you can also use a verification code from the Microsoft Authenticator app even when you don't have an internet connection on your phone.

    1. Select use a verification code from mobile app when presented with the options.

    2. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and click your Geneseo account.

    3. Enter the 6-digit code from the app in the login screen where prompted.
