Cybersecurity Awareness: Multi-Factor Authentication Everywhere

Originally published in Today at Geneseo on October 27, 2022

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security measure that requires anyone logging into an account to complete a two-step process to prove their identity. MFA can include:
• An additional code emailed or texted to you
• A biometric identifier like facial recognition or a fingerprint
• A yes or no button or unique number generated by an authenticator app

Your Geneseo account already has MFA enabled, but what about your personal accounts? Not every account offers MFA, but when it’s available, always turn it on. It’s easy and greatly increases your security. Any place online that is storing your personal information (especially financial information), or any account that can be compromised and used to trick or defraud someone else (such as social media or email) should be protected with MFA.

Check this directory to determine which websites or apps offer MFA and how to turn it on.
