Phishing is a scam using fake emails, social media posts, or direct messages with the goal of luring you to click on a link or download a malicious attachment. Clicking on a phishing link or file can reveal your personal information or install malware onto your device. Before clicking any links or downloading attachments, make sure the email looks legit. Ask yourself these questions:
Is the offer too good to be true?
Does it sound urgent/threatening?
Does it ask for your information?
Were you expecting this message?
Does the email address match the company it’s coming from?
If the email came to your Geneseo email address, report it as quickly as possible. If the email came to your personal email address, don’t do what it says. Don’t click on any links or reply to the email; just delete it. You can also block the sender.

It’s important to keep your passwords safe. Passwords are your first line of defense against cybercriminals and data breaches.
Your passwords should each be long, unique, and complex. Passwords should be at least 12 characters long and be a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Each account should have its own unique password. Never reuse passwords and don’t just change one character or add a number to the end.
Protect your passwords with additional authentication methods, such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), wherever possible.
Password managers make it easy to create, store, and recall passwords can be made easy with free, simple-to-use password manager tools.

One of the easiest methods to improve your cybersecurity is to keep your software and apps updated. Software developers are constantly looking for signs of hackers and searching for holes in their product’s security.
To fix these issues, most software companies release regular updates. In many cases you can make it automatic, so you don’t have to worry about staying on top of updates. If you don’t have automatic software updates turned on, it’s critical to make updating your devices a regular habit. These updates should be installed as soon as possible to avoid any security risks.
Only download software and apps to your computer from verified sources. Pirated, hacked, or unlicensed software can spread malware and viruses. Updates should come from the developer’s official website or the app store.
