These steps are a must to keep your computer, as well as Geneseo resources, protected from Internet viruses, computer worms, and operating system vulnerabilities. 

Steps

  1. Update your Operating System
    1. Windows 
      1. Windows 8.1
        1. Start Button → Settings → Update & recovery → Windows Update → Check for updates
        2. If prompted, click Install Now.
      2. Windows 10
        1. Start Button → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates
        2. If prompted, click Install Now.
    2. Macintosh users should select "System Preferences" from the Apple menu, then click Software Update.

      1. Click Update Now when prompted.
    3. Your computer may need to be restarted more than once during this process. 
    4. You need to repeat this process until all available updates and patches are installed. 

  2. Make sure you have anti-virus/anti-malware software installed.

    1. For Microsoft Windows, Geneseo recommends using Microsoft's built-in Windows Defender.
    2. For macOS, Geneseo recommends using Apple's built-in XProtect and Gatekeeper.
  3. Remove file sharing software from your computer.
    1. In order to avoid problems, CIT discourages the use of any p2p file sharing applications. 
    2. Remove any p2p programs you may have on your computer. Examples include Ares, Bittorrent, Gnutella, Shareaza, and many more.
