Enable or Disable Pop-ups in Common Browsers

Some websites require pop-ups to function correctly—for example, learning platforms (BizLibrary, Brightspace) and certain software installation tools. This article explains how to enable or disable pop-ups in the most common web browsers and how to allow pop-ups for specific sites.

Google Chrome

Chrome lets you turn pop-ups on or off globally or allow them for specific websites. 

Steps: 

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. 

  2. Select Settings

  3. Choose Privacy and securitySite settings

  4. Select Pop-ups and redirects

  5. Choose whether to allow or block pop-ups by default, or add specific sites under Allowed or Blocked

Microsoft Edge

Steps: 

  1. Select the three-dot menu (… ) in the upper-right corner. 

  2. Choose Settings

  3. Select Cookies and site permissions from the left menu. 

  4. Scroll down and choose Pop-ups and redirects

  5. Use the toggle to allow or block pop-ups, or add specific sites under Allow or Block

Mozilla Firefox 

Firefox includes a built-in pop-up blocker with customizable exceptions. 

Steps: 

  1. Select the menu button (☰) and choose Settings

  2. Select Privacy & Security

  3. Scroll to the Permissions section. 

  4. Check or uncheck Block pop-up windows, or select Exceptions to allow specific sites.

Safari (macOS)

Safari allows you to block or allow pop-ups on a site-by-site basis. 

Steps: 

  1. Open Safari and choose SafariSettings

  2. Select the Websites tab. 

  3. Choose Pop-up Windows from the left menu. 

  4. Set your preference for each website or choose a default behavior at the bottom.
