Google Drive File Deletion Warning and Naming Update for Inactive Accounts

Google Drive File Deletion Warning and Naming Update for Inactive Accounts

Originally published on July 23, 2025, in ddc-l@geneseo.edu

What’s Changing?
Although these accounts are no longer active, many of their files remain in Google Drive and may still be accessible to current users through sharing. To ensure these files don’t disappear without notice, we are implementing a new process:

File Naming Update
Files scheduled for deletion will be renamed to include: [Will be deleted on ] at the beginning of the original file name. This change serves as a clear warning and gives current users time to take action.

What You Need to Do
If you still need access to any of these files:

  • Make a copy of the document before the listed deletion date.

  • Note: We will not be moving or preserving original files elsewhere.

Act Promptly
Once the deletion date arrives, the files will be permanently removed from our system.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation as we work to maintain a secure and current digital environment. Questions? Ask CIT!
